Open Pickleball at Ripon High School Gym

Ripon Pickleball Association sponsors continuing Open Pickleball play in the Ripon High School Gym on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. No registration is required and there is no cost to play. Open Pickleball will be held through the month of March.

We will move outside, weather permitting in April at the Ripon College Tennis courts on Thorne Street. Wednesday's from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday mornings 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. weather permitting....we do not play if the outdoor courts are wet.

Ripon Pickleball members to present Demo/Clinic at Center Court Tennis Club in Fond du Lac

USAPA Ambassador, for Green Lake and Fond du Lac County, Dave Lukoski announced today that members of the Ripon Pickleball Association will present a demonstration/clinic of Pickleball, the fastest growing sport in the nation.

The demonstration/clinic will be held at Center Court Tennis Club in Fond du Lac Wisconsin on Thursday, November 17th, 2011 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and is open to the public at no charge.

Center Court Tennis Club is located at 770 W. Scott Street in Fond du Lac.

Ripon Pickleball Fall 2011 Update

Hard to believe it but spring, summer and early fall have come and gone for 2011. We had a great outdoor season and we will try it one more time this coming Saturday, October 29th from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Ripon College Pickleball courts. After that it is highly likely that Ripon College will remove the nets for the winter.

We will then begin our indoor season in earnest. Pickleball will be held on Wednesday's at Ripon Senior High School from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. as part of the City of Ripon's Recreation Program. All are invited, beginners encouraged. We will play on the following dates:

November 3, 2011
November 10, 2011
November 17, 2011
December 7, 2011
December 14, 2011
December 21, 2011

Saturdays will be added in early 2012 and we will post the indoor 2012 schedule when we have the dates firmed up.

Outdoor season to begin soon

We will have our last indoor session of the Winter season (it has been a long one hasn't it) this coming Wednesday April 6th at Ripon High School Gym beginning at 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

We will tentatively begin our outdoor season on Saturday April 9th at 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Ripon College Kemper tennis courts. We will play Saturdays (weather permitting) 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (again weather permitting). Hope to see many of you soon outside.

The nets have been removed at the Pickleball courts on Ripon College Campus. The weather looks bad for this upcoming weekend, so we will be inside Sunday November 14th beginning at noon - 200 p.m. Upper Gymnasium.

Great First Night indoors

We had a first great night of indoor Pickleball in the Gym at Ripon High School. Only seven showed up....but we had fun and playing on a full PB court is certainly an advantage over playing in the Wrestling area.

PB will be outside on Saturday November 6th beginning at 9:00 a.m. as we will take advantage of continuing good fall weather and avoid the upper gym on Sunday. NO PB On Sunday inside.

Manitowoc Pickleball to travel to Ripon on July 31st

Tom Brull and five of his compatriots from the Great City of Manitowoc (the Shipbuilders) will travel to Ripon for a morning of Pickleball on Saturday July 31st at the Ripon college Tennis Courts adjacent to the Kemper Computer Lab on campus. USAPA Amabassador Dave Lukoski said today, "Tom and I have been trying to bring this together for sometime and we finally hit on a date to come together. We are trying to bring Pickleball in Wisconsin together and what a better way to do it than getting together to play a series of matches."

Lukoski said that "Ripon Pickleball looks forward to a return visit to Manty, perhaps this fall or winter when the Manty YMCA is ready for Pickleball play." Congrats to Tom Brull and Manitowoc Pickleball for growing pickleball in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

Ripon Pickleball travels east for beginners clinic in Fond du Lac

Ripon Pickleball traveled east on Tuesday July 20th and conducted a beginners Pickleball clinic in Fond du Lac on Tennis Courts just south of the Fond du Lac Aquatic Center.

USAPA Ambassador (Green Lake/Fond du Lac Counties) Dave Lukoski, Pat Kubisiak and Bob Ollerman headed out and met fourteen enthusiastic participants at the courts and proceeded through a very well attended clinic where all of the participants from Fond du Lac progressed from those very difficult opening minutes of trying to hit a wiffle ball with a short racket to full pickleball play at the end of the evening.

Bob (honest Bob) Ollerman gets full credit for organizing this clinic as a high school classmate (Colleen Deanovich) contacted him about an intro to Pickleball and then delivered herself, her husband Howie and twelve other very interested participants.

We certainly hope that the great interest in Pickleball by these fourteen will encourage the Fond du Lac Recreation Department that there is interest in the great City of Fond du Lac and will agree to sponsor future clinics.

An open invitation was extended to all of the participants to travel to Ripon to play or to have us back for session two. Thanks to all who helped bring this clinic to fruition.

Ripon Pickleball shines at WSG 25

The Ripon Pickleball club was well represented at the 25th annual Wisconsin Senior Games in Sun Prairie on Wednesday June 9th. There were eight doubles team, which was a 100% increase over 2009. Our teams finished, first, second and fourth this year. The results:

Chuck Larson and Dick Swanson, Champions, Men's doubles - Gold Medals
Bob Ollerman and Tom Kramer - Fourth Place
Dave Lukoski and Pat Kubisiak - 2nd Place, Men's Doubles - Silver Medals

Chuck and Dick were undefeated winning all three of their matches in six games. They defeated defending Champions Dave and Pat in the Championship match. Ripon Pickleball was well represented this year again and all who attended thanked Wisconsin Senior Games organizers generally and specifically Mr. Fred Frye who has organized the Pickleball events at the Prairie Athletic complex the last several years.

Congratulations to all...and we will try to post some pictures from the event.

Coach Chuck Larson integrates Pickleball into Tennis Camp
Retired Ripon College Tennis coach Chuck Larson spent thirty-nine years coaching Women's and Men's tennis at Ripon College. During those thirty-nine years Chuck and his teams won twenty two conference titles. Now that Chuck is retired he hosts an annual four day tennis camp for folks at Ripon College. This year Chuck has thirty two attendees and as an avid pickleball player and USAPA member, Chuck finds time within the four days to introduce Pickleball to his campers.

Chuck's love of tennis is obvious as he drills men and women in the finer skills of tennis and does all of us who love pickleball a huge favor by introducing others to pickleball, which seems to be the biggest problem we have up here in the north country:
which is bringing people to the sport so that they can play and fall in love with the sport, like we all have.

Thanks to Chuck Larson for being an outstanding ambassador to the great sport of Pickleball.

Due to a large number of tennis matches being played on Saturday at all three major courts we will schedule PB for Sunday this week (4/18/2010) at the College courts at Noon.

Just a reminder regular PB normally scheduled for Wednesday evenings @ 6 p.m. and Saturday mornings @ 9 at RC Courts on Thorne Street. If there is rain on Saturday mornings we will try to play Sundays at Noon. Rumor has it that those courts may be refurbished this summer but we will keep you apprised of that as we go forward. Some good news: Update from the USAPA. To date there are 25 US Pickleball Association Members from Wisconsin. 8 of those are from Ripon, by far the most from any community in the State. I guess currently we are the Pickleball Capital of Wisconsin. Great job, all 8 members of the USAPA. They are: Buzz, Dave, Sherry, Tom Kramer, Chuck Larson, Pat, Jean and Honest Bob (HB).

Pickleball outside at RC courts until November of 2010

Pickleball will move outside until November. Warm weather forecasted for this week and hopefully beyond.

Pickleball will be held on Wednesday Night from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. at the RC Courts on Thorne Street. We will then meet on Saturday mornings again @ RC from 9:00 a.m. till 10:30 a.m.

We hope to have a community intro to Pickleball on a Saturday afternoon in May for all those who are interested in trying Pickleball.

USAPA provides Ripon Pickleball with new net system

The Ripon Pickeleball association received a grant from the USAPA and received a new net system for traveling throughout the State of Wisconsin trying to increase the numbers of players and communities playing Pickleball.

Ripon association member and USAPA Local Ambassador Dave Lukoski said, "The RPBA is very grateful to the USAPA for providing us with this much needed equipment and we pledge to grow this great sport this coming year. We will travel just about anywhere there is interest for the purpose of increasing the numbers of Pickleball players in the State of Wisconsin."

Lukoski added that he has contacted several Wisconsin Recreation Department directors with the offer of a demonstration to communities in the 40 mile radius around Ripon.

The Ripon Pickleball Association liked the new system so much that they bought a second net system from the USAPA and it was delivered this past Saturday and used on the indoor courts today 2/7.

Thanks to those who have donated cash to defray the cost of the second net system.

Ripon Pickleball ready to promote Pickleball in East Central Wisconsin

The purpose of this article is to introduce myself as a local ambassador for the United States Pickleball Association (USAPA). My mission as a local ambassador is to try to grow the sport of pickleball in the East Central part of the State of Wisconsin. Pickleball is a fun game that is played on a badminton court or even a tennis court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

As of today we do not have a lot of Pickleball players in the State of Wisconsin. My goal is to change that. I fell in love with the game two years ago and we are growing the sport in Ripon, Wi as we now have a group of 24 people who play the sport regularly.

I am not selling anything. What I am doing is offering my assistance to anyone in your community who might be willing to give this sport a chance and introduce it to folks in east central and south central Wisconsin. My group of Pickleball enthusiasts are willing to travel at our time and expense to introduce the game to those who may be interested. The USAPA has provided our group with a portable net system and we have our own personal equipment if your department would be willing to arrange a time and place for a demonstration and an orientation session for those in your community that are interested in our new sport.

The cost of Pickleball equipment to individuals or to Rec departments is relatively small, compared to other sports. Rackets (wood) run around $20 and composite rackets around $50. Perforated whiffle balls cost around $22 per dozen and that is all that is really required to begin play. I repeat however that I do not sell equipment and this is not a sales call. Equipment is available from many online retailers.

Again, if you see a way to offer us a chance we would be most happy to accommodate any group or interested communities to an introduction to this great sport at no cost.

After some weeks of very in climate Pickleball playing by some it is now time to announce the Indoor Pickleball Schedule for 2009-10. Buzz, Chuck and Dave will try one more Wednesday evening this week starting @515 p.m. at the outdoor courts. (It is supposed to be in the fifties and dry)

Thanks to new RPBA member Chuck Larson we have received permission to paint Pickleball Courts on Court #5 and #6 at the Ripon College Tennis Courts on Thorne Street. This would be adjacent to Kemper Computer Center and right behind Dave and Sherry Lukoski's home.

The pickleball courts were painted on Monday and they look great. We will start play there on Wednesday Night.

Hey Darwin Wiese, here’s the perfect sport for Ripon Pickle to sponsor: Pickleball.On Wednesdays at 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 9 a.m., eight to 20 middle-aged people gather at the Ripon High School tennis courts to whack orange and yellow baseball-sized whiffle balls over nets with racketball-sized paddles. (I will not mention the irony of Pickleball being played just yards from the home formerly owned by Ripon’s Dill-ingoffski family.)It’s fast, fun and easy; takes minutes to learn, years to master!

Pickleball courts employ the full width of a singles tennis court and a 7-foot zone on both sides of the net called the “kitchen” within which your serve may not land.Other rules:1. Serves must be underhand with each side taking their first shot off the bounce.2. No smashing from within the kitchen.3. If playing Buzz Neuman, causing him to dive for a ball, one must shout, “Down goes Frazier.” (I learned this from Dave Lukoski, which suggests to me this may be an actual city ordinance.)4. Scoring’s like tennis only with a third number designating who’s serving. (“That’s so we can keep track of who is serving,” Tracy O’Brien explained. “We’re old.”)5. You can only hit the ball once on your side, although Lukoski, after accidentally bouncing it twice, told this novice that “Pickleball has got parts of volleyball in it, too.”

Lori and Tony Hron introduced the sport to Ripon last July, but Lukoski is its greatest cheerleader. Clearly he wants others to “relish” pickleball as well. “We certainly encourage people to join us,” Lukoski said. “Beginners are encouraged. We’d like to see the sport grow. We’ll provide the instruction and equipment.”Lukoski organizes Ripon’s pickleball league, serves as USA Pickleball Association official ambassador for Fond du Lac/Green Lake counties and hosts Ripon Pickleball’s Web Site: riponpickleball.blogspot.com.

Pat Kubisiak puts pickleball into perspective. “You can’t take this game too seriously,” he said. “You play and you look like a horse’s patoot. Fifteen minutes later you look like a million bucks.”

Spring in the air, outdoor pickleball returns

Spring appears to be in the air as the nets at RHS have been installed after a very long and cold winter in East Central Wisconsin. Tentatively we will return to the outdoor courts this coming Saturday @ 9:00 a.m. We will retain the keys to the upper gym and the reservation for March 29th just in case we get bad weather this coming weekend. I will throw out times for outdoor pickle ball just to see if we get comment.

I suggest 9:00 a.m. Saturday mornings (just to give the morning a chance to warm a little) and 6:15 p.m. on Wednesdays as official pickleball dates at RHS outdoor courts. We can always change the days and times if something works out better for our association members.

Pickleball matches will be played as scheduled by the Omnipotent Commissioner on Wednesday evenings (6:30 p.m. RHS Courts) and on Saturday mornings (8:30 a.m. RHS Courts).

Results of those contests will be published soon, even though we play for fun.

What is Pickleball? Pickleball is a fun game that is played on a badminton or Tennis court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

Why is Tony Hron the Commissioner?

Largest Turnout ever on Wednesday, July 30th

We had 20 Pickle Ball Players participating at RHS on Wednesday Night. It was a great turnout and we had five courts going until the RHS Girls Tennis team forced a modification of the Schedule. New Players joining us for the first time:
